Once your website is built and content is in place, your job as a blogger/webmaster are far from over. This is only the beginning! SEO is one of the most important things to keep in mind as you continue to build and shape your site into an empire. How do you know if you site’s SEO is as high as it needs to be? You use website analysis tools to learn your SEO score, and improve the factors that are low or lacking!
Every website analysis tool you use will give you a different rating, but they will all reveal different things that need your attention as well. Your SEO score really is a dynamic, ever-evolving beast that needs your constant attention. In my “What is SEO” post, I discuss the various factors and elements that go into the SEO of your site. These same elements are factored into your SEO score. Learn them, know them, dream about them when you sleep! Welcome to the SEO show: the story of you life as a website person.
What Is A Website Analysis Tool?
Through the years, I have discovered a handful of kickass website analysis tools that give you a birds eye view of why your site is or isn’t ranking for your chosen keywords. These tools will grade your site based on numerous factors such as:
- nofollow/dofollow links ratio
- total number of backlinks and referring domains
- duplicate content
- Indexable pages not in sitemap
- site speed
- images without an alt attribute
- indexed pages with more than one H1 tag
- and much, MUCH more…
I think you get the point. There are so many factors that you need to be aware of. There are SEO aspects, technical aspects, and content aspects – all of which count towards your overall SEO score. Google is a smart cookie. They can see your entire site, how popular it is, what people say about it, and how good you are at conveying your personal message to your intended target audience. No website analysis tool will give you the whole story, but by using a few tools, you can get data that the other tools may have missed.
SEMRush is a pretty awesome tool that allows you to check out the SEO of your competitors and find competitors keywords. It does a heck of a lot more than that though. Watch the video below for a demonstration of the SEMRush tool in action (credit goes to the folks over at NichePursuits.com)
SEMRush will allow you to do make the following analytic reports:
- See your competitors best keywords
- Discover new organic competitors attempting to rank on Google
- Uncover your competitor’s ad strategies, budget, ad copies, and keywords
- Spot new display ad publishers and analyze their display ads
- Conduct a deep link analysis
- Understand referring domain’s authority

The reports above don’t include the tools and projects SEMRush endows you with. Just click here to see what SEMRush offers you. You can even start for free! How cool is that?
Getting a competitive edge is cool and all, but sometimes you want to dissect your own site and make it even better. I don’t remember exactly how I found this site, but it is pure gold. Onpage.org breaks down all the aspects of your site, and will actually show you everything you need to address that may be holding your site back from a higher SEO score.
Once you have signed up for Onpage, you will be able to immediately get a diagnostic on your site so you can see right away what you need to fix and what may require additional attention. Onpage will crawl your site and display your results on an easy-to-follow dashboard (shown below)
You can crawl your site once a month (anytime with the PRO upgrade) and they will even email you the results of the crawl. Your features are far more powerful with the Pro upgrade. This software is very powerful and will help you deal with the negative aspects of your site so you can propel in the SERPs!
#3 TRAFFIC TRAVIS
If SEMRush is too expensive for you at the moment, I totally get it. Traffic Travis is a great alternative for anyone that wants to spy on their competition and analyze where their site lies in respect to those they are competing against. For the past several product reviews I have written, I have used Traffic Travis to outrank my competition and get on page one.
The free version will meet your most basic needs. You can only do two projects at a time (two pages of your site), but you can always delete your projects and start new ones when you are ready to optimize your next page. With the pro version (one time payment of $100) you can start unlimited projects and see how it ranks on all the search engines locally and internationally.
Here are a few of the many Traffic Travis features:
- Perform a full SEO health check on any site you desire.
- Find out why competitors outrank you, then beat them.
- Discover the juiciest links your competitors use to rank their content, then use those links for your own content.
- Keep tabs on your competitors to spot keywords you should target.
- Monitor your keywords and see how they are ranking on a regular basis.
- Find respected link partners and build quality backlinks.
You don’t need to buy Traffic Travis to be successful with it, however, it will be much more effective and powerful if you do the upgrade.

Most people that are attempting to figure out their site’s/competitor’s backlinks and how they are ranking almost always stumble upon Ahrefs eventually. Ahrefs is one of the most utilized position tracker/site optimizer services available on the web.
Ahrefs is yet another service that offers a free version and various paid versions, depending on the size of your business and what you are looking for. As you grow your site, you may want to consider the upgrades. For now, if you are new to SEO and site building, the free version will work just fine.
Ahrefs will allow you to track the following stats and data from a convenient dashboard:
- Your Ahrefs site rank (when compared with all other visible sites on the internet)
- Domain health (considerable various issues (critical/non critical)

- Referring Domains

- Tracking keywords (up to 5 with the free version)
My favorite feature is the tracking keywords. I simply load my most lucrative keywords, and it updates me everyday on where they are ranking on Google. I am also emailed once a week with my ranking keywords and their net changes throughout the week. Keep in mind, you will get this with the free version!
